Cervical Cancer is the second killer of women in the Philippines with an average of 12 Filipinas die each day of the disease as announced by the Department of Health. Its real cause is still unknown to experts but some risk factors involve early sexual experience, having multiple sexual partners, getting infected by the Human Papilloma Virus(HPV),which infects the genital tract, and other sexula-related factors. However, some medical experts believe that the use of sanitary napkins may cause acquiring the said malignancy. In a laboratory test conducted in Japan, they found out 107 bacteria per mm2 in a sanitary napkin that was used in just two(2)hours. That involved hundreds of thousands of bacteria in the whole napkin pad! Therefore using sanitary pads even for a short period of 2 hours is very unhygienic. Dr. Kriplani, an Indian professor who specializes in gynecology said that unhygienic sanitary practices can cause urinary tract infections which can lead to cervical cancer. However, it would be too inconvenient and not cost-efficient to change pad every hour. Thus, some resort to tampons. Tampons is a mass of cotton or rayon or a mixture of the two inserted into the vagina to absorb menstrual fluid. But, it is said that tampons contain asbestos that will cause a woman to bleed more therefore she will needing the product more which means more profit to the manufacturer. Also, it is unhealthy to suppress the natural menstrual flow which may lead to serious reproductive problems.
